My name is Stephen Nye aka DJ Nyzee. I was drawn to the sounds of Jamaica in my teens and have visited the island at least fifteen times. Prior to joining the Sanctuary/Trojan partnership I wrote on the subject for Square One books and Virgin as well as specialist sites online. My association with Trojan led to me being asked to DJ on a regular basis for the label around the time I was compiling and annotating various compilations. These included the popular Boxed Set series, Best Of(s), genre specific, mento, calypso, ska, roots, ragga and even a reggae tribute to Elvis Presley.
Further compilation work followed for Island Records, Virgin Records, Sunrise Records, Fantastic Voyage, Atom Music and Cherry Red’s Doctor Bird label*. These include, Marcia Griffiths, `Naturality/Stepping’, `Tomorrow People the Best of Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers’, Bob Marley and the Wailers, `Keep On Skanking’, `Island Records Present Lovers’ and a best of LKJ with input from the dub poet himself. In my research I was honoured to meet a host of supas such as Dave Barker, Dennis AlCapone, George Agard, Jacob Miller, Ken Parker, Lee Perry, Little Roy, Mafia & Fluxy, Marcia Griffiths, Max Romeo, Neil Mad Professor Fraser, Sly & Robbie, Starkey Banton, Winston Groovy and Levi Roots (before his Reggae Sauce project went global).
This led to a treasured DJ partnership playing various gigs in the capital and beyond with my sparring partner Rose Livewire to mention a few; The Market Bar near Oxford Street for one of Trojan’s many official Reggae events, Jaguar Shoes, The Cantaloupe group, various Art galleries, Notting Hill Arts Club in London, I have also made two appearances for the label at the Notting Hill Carnival playing out at the Mau Mau Bar and at the legendary Herbal nightclub in Shoreditch for The Trojan Sunday Service.
In addition I have played at the Kaya Festival in Wales. I was subsequently invited to play alongside Livewire on The Live Injection Show for Roots FM, where we gained a regular following.
We were also invited to join Caveman/MCM on his Cool & Deadly show prior to him joining the Hale London team. So I give thanks for the opportunity to present on Hale London, celebrating the influence of Jamaica to the world.
